Warehouse racking, also known as storing or pallet racking, is a material handling method appropriate for bulk storage of goods condensed on slews or pallets. It consents to the efficient operation of space while providing easy access to stored items for better inventory control. Racks are used by manufacturers for bulk storage of commonly non-perishable products when storage space is not enough.

Benefits of a Warehouse Racking System

  • Competent storage space utilization: As stated earlier, racking takes benefit of the available vertical space that is otherwise unexploited. Warehouses that are built to enclose racks are made with high ceilings to allow racks with higher bays.
  • Easy inventory organization: Racks can be addressed simply in comparison to storing. Storing goods with many different varieties is effectively impossible with hoarding without consuming large floor spaces. A kind of racking system, known as discriminating racking, allows the storing of different types of goods while keeping the disbursed space to a minimum.
  • Improved employee productivity: In a racking method, the empty pallet position can easily be placed and accessed. This allows the purging of small excessive movements that in time stack up to major losses.
  • Storage automation: Familiarizing a racking system is the first step to warehouse automation. This is attained by integrating smart conveyor systems and guided forklifts and cranes.

Types of Warehouse Racking Systems

Selective Racking

Selective pallet racking is categorized by having a high SKU count but offers the lowest storage density. Conventional selective pallet racking can be envisioned as big shelves that have storage space for a single row of items. The racks can be arranged continuously to improve storage density. It has a small storage density because of the space consumed by the lanes.

Teardrop Racks

Teardrop racking is a kind of selective racking that has altered frame and beam attachments that can be reconfigured and extended easily without the use of machine tools. Upside down teardrop-shaped dumps are punched along the upright frames where pins attached to the beams are inserted. As the pin falls into the elongated opening, resistance secures it in place without requiring additional fasteners. This connection has sufficient strength to be similar to permanent joints.

Slotted Racks

These are occasionally referred to as structural racks. Instead of using upside-down teardrop-shaped dumps, slotted racks have a pair of rectangular openings milled along with the upright frame. Supplement between the frame and the beam can be by knobs distended from the beam or by bolts. The main benefit of using slotted racks over teardrop is its higher durability and strength.

Double Deep Pallet Racking

This is an alteration of the regular selective racking where instead of using single pallet rows, two rows are used per pallet projection. This increases the storing capacity of a selective racking by 40 to 60%. This also presents the benefits seen from the standard selective racking.

Push-back Racking

This kind of racking involves stacking the pallet on carts resting on a pair of rails that are obtainable on each push-back lane. These carts are designed to be nested at the front of the lane. To load a pallet, the forklift pushes against the other pallet which moves it deeper into the lane. This dynamic system of racking consents to advanced storage density than single or double deep racking.
